Appetite for success

Appetite for success

Fourchettes de l’Espoir, Montreal North

Montreal North is known for its diverse mix of cultures but also for its poverty, which inevitably impacts youth and families the most and is keenly felt in a neighborhood where many households are headed by single parents.

One result is the high drop-out rate. To encourage youth to stay in school and pursue their studies, the team at Fourchettes de l’Espoir created the Ma première expérience de travail initiative aimed at youth ages 14 and 15.

Ma première expérience de travail is a unique project that offers youth ages 14 and 15 an eight-week career planning experience that puts them on track for future studies and motivates them to stay in school to achieve their goals.

“The idea is that by starting to plan their career today, they increase their chances of becoming successful adults that contribute to society tomorrow”, says organization director Brunilda Reyes.

The project gives youth an opportunity to explore different real-life work settings in a safe, supervised context and gain an understanding of the skills and education needed to pursue various career paths. Divided over an eight week period, the first four weeks offer on-site workplace experience with the second four weeks devoted to other career exploration activities and personal development.

As a well-established Montreal North organization and long-time LÉGER FOUNDATION community partner in the fight against poverty, Fourchettes de l’Espoir aims to improve conditions for residents of this multi-ethnic, low-income neighborhood in several ways: by facilitating access to healthy, culturally acceptable food at an affordable price, by offering programs and activities related to culinary arts, through food security programs and services designed to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, as well as by helping residents in other ways to ensure their integration into society.
